It is indeed difficult to explain the history of a place inhabited since early stone age! Various tools, scriptures and artifacts form the living history of Jabalpur and surrounding regions like Garha, Mandla and Damoh. The river Narmada finds mention as one of the holiest rivers in literatures dating back to about 5000 B.C. A lot of ancient findings are preserved at the Rani Durgavati Museum near Bhanvartaal park. Most prominent of the kingdoms ruling the region had been the Hahayas(King Sahastrabahu), followed by the Mouryas, Satavahans, Guptas, Rashtrakuts,etc. Another important kingdom was the Kalchuri kingdom who ruled till around 12 th century AD. The region was an important centre for business and culture during their rule. Then came the Gond kingdom and stories of the brave queen Durgavati, who fought the Mughals are part of folklore here. The famous Madan Mahal was built during their rule. The region was later ruled by the Marathas, who lost it to the British in 1817.The British too, left their mark on Jabalpur, through their colonial residences and India's most beautiful cantonment. The game of Snooker was invented here. Post Independence(1947AD), Jabalpur forms a major centre for various govt. and defence institutions like MPSEB, Telecom Factory, Vehicle Factory, GCF, TTC, OFK etc. Needless to say, Jabalpur has its own treasure of people and events which only time has seen.
